About This Race
The Hangzhou Marathon runs around West Lake — one of China's most celebrated landscapes and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, immortalized in Chinese poetry for 2,000 years. The Song Dynasty emperor proclaimed Hangzhou "Heaven on Earth" and it inspired Marco Polo to call it "the finest and most splendid city in the world." The course runs the entire circumference of West Lake past willow-draped causeways, 10th-century three-pagoda islands, Song Dynasty garden pavilions, and into the Longjing (Dragon Well) tea plantation hills.
