About
The 51st Marine Corps Marathon is the third-largest marathon in the United States and the largest in the world that does not offer prize money, earning its nickname "The People's Marathon." Founded by Colonel James L. Fowler in 1976, the course managed by the U. S. Marines runs through Arlington, VA and Washington, D. C., passing iconic monuments and landmarks including the National Mall, the Pentagon, and finishing at the Marine Corps War Memorial (Iwo Jima). Runners from more than 50 countries participate annually, with medals awarded by U. S. Marines at the finish line.
