Held each January in Tromso, north of the Arctic Circle at about 70N, the PolarNight Marathon runs through the polar night, when the sun never climbs above the horizon and racers start around midday in deep blue Arctic twilight. Organised since 2004 by the Midnight Sun Marathon foundation, it offers marathon, half marathon, 10K and 5K distances over snowy, icy streets lit by torches and candles, temperatures often near -5C, with a chance of the northern lights overhead.
