First run in 1977 as the Joe Steele Rocket City Marathon and still put on by the Huntsville Track Club, it was the first marathon held in Alabama and remains a USATF-certified Boston qualifier. The gently rolling, fast December course tours downtown Huntsville, passes the U.S. Space and Rocket Center to run beside rockets and a space shuttle, crosses the Botanical Garden, and finishes indoors in the Von Braun Center. Full, half, 10K, 5K and one-mile events; cool highs near 53F.
