About This Race
The OBX Marathon runs through the Outer Banks — a 200-mile chain of narrow barrier islands off the North Carolina coast known as the "Graveyard of the Atlantic" for the thousands of ships wrecked on its treacherous shoals. The flat, virtually wind-powered course runs along Roanoke Island (where America's first English colony vanished in 1590), past the Wright Brothers National Memorial at Kitty Hawk (where flight was invented in 1903), through Nags Head, and beside wild Spanish Mustang horses roaming the dunes.
