About This Race

The Mt. Marathon Race is arguably the most extreme short-distance race in America — a July 4th Independence Day tradition in Seward since 1915 (making it one of the oldest trail races in the US). The 3.1-mile course goes STRAIGHT UP the 3,022-foot face of Mt. Marathon through alder brush, scree, snow patches, and slippery rotten rock to the summit — then runners plunge back down the same way, careering off rocks and sliding through snowfields. Runners regularly tumble and bleed.
